Winter Storm Warning

...Winter Storm Warning in effect until 11 am MST Wednesday...

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow...which is in effect until 11 am MST Wednesday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

* Snow accumulations...6 to 12 inches...except 15 to 20 inches across the northwest mountains and the higher peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Locally higher amounts are possible on west facing slopes.

* Timing...rain and high elevation snow will begin today as an upper level trough crosses from the west. Precipitation should decrease in coverage and intensity across central and southwest areas tonight...only to intensify and become more widespread as the upper level low pressure system drops southward near new mexicos western border Tuesday through Tuesday night. Snow will then gradually taper off from the north late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as the upper low gradually exits southeast of the area.

* Winds...south 5 to 15 mph.

* Snow levels...near and above 7000 feet today...then lowering to valley bottoms tonight for the duration of the event.

* Local impacts...impacts to travel will be limited to roads over the Continental Divide and mountain passes today. However...lower elevation roads will also become snow packed and icy tonight. Some roads may become impassable due to heavy snow Tuesday and Tuesday night. Visibilities will also drop below a quarter mile during periods of heavy snow.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency. If you must travel...keep an extra flashlight...food... and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
