Winter Storm Warning for New Mexico

Widespread snow with major impacts Wednesday through Thursday.

Snow will develop tonight over the northern mountains and northeast and spread South Wednesday and Wednesday night and continue through the day Thursday. Snow from the central mountain peaks to the Texas border will be heavy at times. Snow will diminish from northwest to southeast later Thursday through Thursday night. Strong East canyon winds into portions of the Rio Grande Valley Wednesday night into Thursday will create blowing snow and make placement of accumulating snow very difficult.

Winter Storm Warning in effect from 6 am Wednesday to 5 pm MST Thursday.

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow, which is in effect from 6 am Wednesday to 5 pm MST Thursday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

Snow accumulations: 3 to 6 inches in the valleys, 6 to 10 over the mountains and Eastern Plains, with locally around 12 inches.
Timing: snow will begin Wednesday morning and increase in coverage and intensity Wednesday afternoon. Snow will be heavy at times Wednesday night and Thursday morning before diminishing Thursday afternoon.
Winds: east to northeast 10 to 20 ph except locally 20 to 30 mph, resulting in some blowing and drifting snow.
Snow levels: temperatures will be cold enough for snow at all locations by Wednesday evening.
Local Impacts: significant snows will result in treacherous winter driving conditions with snow packed and icy roadways. Some roadways will become impassible and be closed. The visibilities will be also significantly reduced in falling and blowing snow.

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous.
