Blizzard-Like Conditions on Parts of Highway to Los Alamos

Travel is discouraged, according to reports from nmroads, on the upper elevations of the road to Los Alamos. They have declared Severe Driving Conditions N.M. Highway 4 between mile markers 19 and 46. This is the stretch from above Jemez Springs to the Los Alamos County Line.

This classification of road conditions is just one notch below from having the road closed to traffic. The roads are described as snow packed and icy with poor visibility and blizzard-like conditions.

South of Jemez Springs, despite the heavy snowfall, above freezing temperatures have kept the roads free of snow and ice. This might change as the temperatures drop overnight. The forecast calls for a chance of rain and snow at the lower elevations through the day tomorrow, with the temperatures staying above freezing. The snow will continue through Thursday night, when up to 3 inches of accumulation is possible.

On the stretch of N.M. Highway 4 passing through the Valles Caldera the temperature are forecast to remain below freezing over the next few days with over 1 foot of snow accumulation by Friday morning. The Preserve will be closed tomorrow.
