Wanted: Volunteer Trail Crews
Santa Fe NF Offers Trail Crew Classes, Volunteer Opportunities
Santa Fe, NM – March 11, 2016 – For Immediate Release. Think about your favorite trail on the Santa Fe National Forest. It may look like a simple path through the woods, but it takes time, effort and, yes, money to build and maintain the trails used by hikers and other recreationists.

The Santa Fe National Forest Española Ranger District is seeking volunteers interested in learning about trail building and maintenance or leading a volunteer trail crew. The spring 2016 Trail Crew Leader Course begins March 26 at 9 a.m. in Española and runs through June 11, 2016.

The course will teach the nuts and bolts of trail maintenance and construction, handling and maintaining tools, and laying out and surveying new trail. Participants can earn certifications for crosscut and chainsaw sawyer. Volunteering on the Santa Fe National Forest also gives participants the opportunity to impact public lands in a positive way, meet like-minded people, and enhance their leadership and teambuilding skills.

Upcoming classes and workdays:

Saturday, March 26 (9:00-12:00) – crew leader orientation/kick-off meeting in Española
Saturday, April 2 (9:00-2:00) – class/workday on Dead Dog Trail to work on retaining wall
Saturday, April 16 (9:00-2:00) – class/workday (location TBA)

Volunteers should wear long sleeves, long pants, above-ankle non-skid boots and leather gloves to protect them from terrain that can be thorny and rocky. They should bring a backpack with lunch and at least two quarts of water. Tools and hard hats will be provided by the Santa Fe National Forest.
