State Forestry Update on Fires Near and Far
NM Wildfire Updates, 6/24/16 at 12:30 p.m.

The New Mexico State Forestry (NMSF) notices warn us that the fire danger levels have grown to "extreme" in much of forested New Mexico, and that numerous fires, including two in the Jemez and more in nearby areas, have dotted the state. The effective response of fire crews, from different parts of the region aiding each other, has been outstanding, as we experienced with the Paliza and Battleship Campground fires.

The Dog Head Fire, burning tens of homes and thousands of acres of forest in the Cibola National Forest, has been most damaging to human property, so far.

The NMSF lists all the fire incidents occurring at the moment:

104 Fire: A fire has burned an estimated 750 acres of private land near mile marker 14.5 on Hwy. 104, east of Las Vegas. No structures are threatened. Multiple resources are engaged in fire suppression. The fire is 50% contained.

Blue Hill Fire: This fire in Harding County burned an estimated 40-50 acres on private land near Mosquero. It has been fully contained. This is the final notification.

Chimayó Fire: This previously unnamed fire near Chimayó in Rio Arriba County burned approximately 3.29 acres of BLM land. The fire was contained yesterday. This is the final notification.

Curtis Valley Fire: Resources have stopped the growth of this three-acre fire in the Lincoln National Forest. Federal resources are continuing suppression activities.

Dog Head Fire: There has been no growth on the Dog Head Fire. The fire is 86% contained. The site experienced 2-3 in. of rain from late yesterday through early this morning. There are no reports of flooding. No fire activity is expected today. The in-brief between the departing Type I team and the incoming Type III team will occur this morning. Demobilization of resources continues.

Goldmine Fire: The fire has burned an estimated 44 acres on private land near Madrid in the Ortiz Mountains. Resources have stopped the fire’s progression. Crews are completing handline around the perimeter and will begin mop up. The fire is 0% contained at this time. Approximately 75 personnel are at the incident.

McClure Fire: After surveillance, the size of the fire is reportedly 7.5 acres, a reduction in the previously reported size. The fire is located on the west side of the drainage. The area experienced some rain last night. Late yesterday the fire was treated with fire retardant and water drops. Today multiple resources, including four hotshot crews, three tankers, and three helicopters, are continuing suppression activities.

North McMillan Fire: A lightning-caused fire burned approximately 30 acres of private land near Ft. Sumner National Monument in DeBaca County. The fire began late last night and was contained shortly after midnight. This is the final notification.

There are no updates to the McKenna, North, Spur, and Turkey Fires. These ongoing fires are being federally managed for resource benefit.
