News Update 6/11 PM (Thompson Ridge Fire Wildfire)

Acres: 21,900 Start date: May 31, 2013 Cause: Downed powerline Location: Valles Caldera National Preserve, NM Containment: 50 percent Fuels: Mixed conifer and Ponderosa pine Terrain: Steep, rugged Resources: 20 crews, 48 engines, 34 water tenders, 6 dozers Total personnel: 991 Available air support: 3 air tankers, 6 helicopters Once again, weather caused extreme fire behavior today. High winds and temperatures, coupled with single digit humidity, were the main reasons for the large 20,000 foot column. The column burned in an area approximately two miles northwest of Redondo Peak that was previously untouched by fire. Despite this intense behavior, the fire remained within the containment lines. Seven hotshot crews continued an aggressive direct attack on the southeastern side of South Mountain and completed handline around the mountain.
