High winds and temperatures, coupled with single digit humidity, were the main reasons for the large 20,000 foot column. The column burned in an area approximately two miles northwest of Redondo Peak that was previously untouched by fire. Despite this intense behavior, the fire remained within the containment lines. Seven hotshot crews continued an aggressive direct attack on the southeastern side of South Mountain and completed handline around the mountain.
