NM Wildfire Updates, 7.13.16., 4:30 PM

246 Fire: Approximately 10 acres of private land burned just north of Capitan in Lincoln County. The fire is 100% contained. All resources have been released. This is the final notification.

Clavel Fire: No changes in size or activity have been reported for this fire near Roy in Harding County. It is 90% contained and no longer producing visible smoke.

The fire on the East side of Hwy 4, mm 29 was contained last evening. LCVFD responded, but was not needed as FS folks took care of it. Thank you Jemez District FS!

Be attentive folks. Not only for the Red Alert due to high winds during a hot dry spell, but bears! One neighbor off Los Griegos saw three different bears walk by her home this past week. Please bring all outdoor food inside, and secure trash cans!

Three different bears have been seen in the area of Los Griegos and Shannon's Way.

They’re Back! And This Year, They Aren’t Alone

Western Tent Caterpillar, Western Spruce Budworm Active on
Santa Fe National Forest

SANTA FE, NM – July 7, 2016 – For Immediate Release. Forest Service entomologist Dr. Andrew Graves confirms that the western tent caterpillar that feasted on the Santa Fe National Forest’s aspen groves last year is back for more. And this year, the mixed conifer forests at lower elevations are feeling the effects of another defoliator, the western spruce budworm.

Big Hat Fire To Become More Active With Drier Conditions

Jemez Springs, NM — With drier conditions, fire activity and smoke are expected to increase with the lightning caused Big Hat Fire, now at 200 acres. Fire managers will continue to take advantage of favorable conditions to meet management objectives to benefit resources within the Valles Caldera National Preserve.

There has been a bear spotted walking around Mesa Verde and Hovenweep. Please keep all pet food indoors and garbage secured.
