Fire managers on the Jemez Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) plan to implement a prescribed burn, if conditions allow, between October 15 and November 30 in the Tent Rocks area. The treatment area is approximately 3.5 miles north of Jemez Springs, NM and less than 1 mile southwest of La Cueva, NM. The Tent Rocks prescribed burn is to reduce risk of high-severity wildfire.

To take advantage of favorable conditions, to include fuel moisture levels, air quality and weather forecasts, fire managers on the Jemez Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) expect to begin ignitions sometime between October 15 and November 30 on Joaquin piles to reduce the risk of high-severity wildfire.

Weather permitting, crews are expected to treat up to 347 acres of the Joaquin piles.

LCVFD was toned out for to look for a brush fire last night south of SLP past Cerro Pelado. The fire is on USFS property. The terrain was too dangerous and steep to for us to get to late at night, so we notified USFS and they have been working on it since early this morning. The fire is 3-4 acres and is smoldering. It is currently not considered a threat to SLP.

SANTA FE, NM – August 14, 2018 – For Immediate Release – After one of the driest fire seasons on record, Santa Fe National Forest personnel want to remind the public that the Forest is open for fuelwood collection, but with a “twist”.

“We want to make up for the time lost during our closure by raising the limit on dead and down fuelwood from ten to 15 cords,” said Jamie Bennett, district ranger for the Cuba Ranger District. “The permit will allow wood gathering until December 31st, 2018.”

SLPPOA has hired a road contractor that will start mobilizing equipment on Friday and start the work on Monday. Please be aware that because some phone lines are exposed near the road surface, they may be cut during the grading process. Please call Windstream if you should lose local phone service.

One of our members was down at the Canon transfer station and was given a flyer by the attendant who told them that garbage collection may be a possibility as Universal Waste Systems of New Mexico had signed a contract with Sandoval County to pick up trash everywhere.

This may be optimistic thinking, but if enough residents here call and ask for service, they might really come up to SLP. The phone number to ask for service is 505 377-8833.
