Prescribed Burn Planned on Santa Fe National Forest

SANTA FE, NM – Feb. 11, 2015 – For Immediate Release.

Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest are planning to conduct a prescribed pile burn on the Jemez Ranger District. The Virgin Mesa prescribed burn may be conducted from Feb. 23, through March 31, 2015, only if conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality and weather forecasts, are favorable.

NM4 northbound and southbound from MM12 to MM46.(from South Jemez Springs to Los Alamos County Line). Road is snow packed. Visibility is fair, moderate snow fall. Please drive with caution, reduce speed and obey all posted traffic signs.

Schools, LANL, County On Two Hour Delay, Roads Difficult

Los Alamos Public School Superintendent Dr. Gene Schmidt has announced that all elementary schools as well as the middle school and high school are on a delayed schedule due to snow and will open at 10 a.m. today.

New Mexico to get rain, snow along with below-normal temps

Forecasters say New Mexico is about to get another big burst of winter weather.

The National Weather Service says a strong cold front is expected to move into the state Wednesday night and Thursday, producing below-normal temperatures and precipitation.

According to a special weather statement, there will be rain and high-elevation snow across most of northern and central New Mexico Thursday night.

Cold and wet and snowy conditions are expected to prevail from Thursday night to Sunday, with the potential for heavy snowfall in the mountains.

Valles Caldera Preserve Becomes New Unit Of NPS

DENVER — On Dec. 19, 2014, Congress designated the Valles Caldera National Preserve a unit of the national park system. Another six new national park units were also authorized recently by Congress. When fully implemented, these will bring the total number of National Park Service (NPS) units to 408.

Widespread snow with major impacts Wednesday through Thursday.

Snow will develop tonight over the northern mountains and northeast and spread South Wednesday and Wednesday night and continue through the day Thursday. Snow from the central mountain peaks to the Texas border will be heavy at times. Snow will diminish from northwest to southeast later Thursday through Thursday night. Strong East canyon winds into portions of the Rio Grande Valley Wednesday night into Thursday will create blowing snow and make placement of accumulating snow very difficult.
