Acres: 23,946 Start date: May 31, 2013 Cause: Downed powerline Location: Valles Caldera National Preserve, NM Containment: 60 percent Fuels: Mixed conifer and Ponderosa pine Terrain: Steep, rugged Resources: 16 crews, 42 engines, 33 water tenders, 5 dozers Total personnel: 885 Available air support: 3 air tankers, 6 helicopters Firefighters took advantage of favorable conditions to conduct burnout operations along the containment line on the southwest flank of the fire along Valles Caldera Road 02 (VC02). Aerial ignitions were initiated around 3:30 in the afternoon.

Today through the morning hours we received a nice cover of clouds, which helped to moderate our fire behavior. The columns and runs that were expected to start early did not materialize.

It is burning in a 1300-acre area of downed timber caused by a wind event six years ago Size: Approx. 8,000 ac. The fire is being observed by air and the heavy smoke has made it difficult to determine the true size of the fire.

The majority of activity involved patrolling on the northeast edge of the fire and continued mop up operations south towards the Headquarters District.

Size: Estimated 6,000 acres—a more accurate size will become available following the infrared mapping flight later tonight.

High winds and temperatures, coupled with single digit humidity, were the main reasons for the large 20,000 foot column.

Much of the interior burning that occurred yesterday and through the night was reburn.
